Metabones eND Smart Adapter Opens up a New Degree of Freedom for Cinematography
(PDF Version)
Vancouver, Canada, September 12th, 2024 - The iris controls depth-of-field in cinematography, whereas the shutter speed/angle controls the motion blur. Metabones Canon EF to Sony E CINE eND Smart Adapter controls the exposure with an electronically-controlled neutral density (ND) filter, which means cinematographers have artistic control over these three essential variables independently.
An OLED display shows the status and settings, and a rotary dial controls the eND filter, which has an adjustment range of -2 to -7 stops. Everything is powered by the camera, with no external power source necessary. At the simple flick of a lever, the eND filter is swapped out and replaced by a clear filter, which has the appropriate thickness to make sure that back-focus remains the same.
Canon EF mount and EF-S mount lenses can be used with Metabones EF-E CINE eND Smart Adapter, adapting them to be used on Sony E mount cameras. Metabones invented the Smart Adapter in 2012, and has been the leader ever since. Metabones has been offering exclusive features pertinent to video, such as support for most cinema lenses, including Canon CN-E Compact Servo zooms, with power zoom, autofocus, and auto iris, and Sigma CINE lenses in Canon EF mount, with lens metadata display on the camera. Metabones' smooth iris feature smooths out aperture/iris changes to make them aesthetically pleasing, and works with many Canon, Sigma and Tamron lenses. Metabones is equally great for still photography, having the fastest phase-detection autofocus (PDAF) of any adapter on the market. Both in-body image stabilization (IBIS) and optical image stabilization (OIS) are supported, with optimizations to maximize effectiveness.
One of the top reasons why Metabones is trusted and widely used by professionals all over the world is the firmware updates, boosting some of the longest firmware support periods in the camera industry. As mirrorless camera technology evolves over the years, so does Metabones firmware - performance improves, more cameras and lenses are supported, and new features are added - all these at no additional cost to the customer, but just a free download from www.metabones.com.

About Metabones
Metabones®, together with its allied partners Caldwell Photographic and WB Design, is the pioneer and leader of two key technologies which have catalyzed the transition from mirror to mirrorless. Speed Booster® (winner of the 2013 TIPA Best Photo Accessory Award) makes lenses brighter, wider and sharper, and Smart Adapter™ breaks the lens mount compatibility barrier by electronically integrating interchangeable single-lens reflex (SLR) lenses and mirrorless cameras. Metabones® offers a comprehensive range of adapters covering the most popular lens mounts, as well as some rare and exotic ones. "Always at the forefront of innovation without ever setting asidepracticality as a professional tool" perhaps best epitomizes Metabones' philosophy.
