Metabones EF-MFT mount Speed Boosters Upgrades
(PDF Version)
Vancouver, Canada, November 22, 2024 - Metabones launches EF-MFT mount T Speed Booster ULTRA 0.71x II and EF-MFT mount T Speed Booster XL 0.64x II today. These updated products inherit an exclusive feature set from the originals: phase-detection autofocus (PDAF) on supported cameras including Panasonic GH7, smooth iris with supported Canon, Sigma and Tamron lenses for aesthetically-pleasing iris/aperture transitions in movies, and optimized support for both in-body image stabilization (IBIS) and optical image stabilization (OIS). EF-MFT mount T Speed Booster ULTRA 0.71x II has the same optics as its predecessor, a 5-element/4-group optical design incorporating ultra-high index tantalum-based optical glass and specifically optimized for the MFT mount T sensor size and filter stack, for unsurpassed optical quality. MTF (modulation transfer function) is increased across the entire image – MFT mount Speed Booster ULTRA always enhances but never degrades the sharpness of the attached lens. It shortens (widens) the focal length of the attached lens by 0.71 times and increases brightness by 1 stop. Similarly, EF-MFT mount T Speed Booster XL 0.64x II shares its 6-element/4-group optical design with its predecessor. It shortens (widens) the focal length by 0.64x and increases brightness by 1-1/3 stops. Both are designed by Caldwell Photographic in the USA.
EF-MFT mount T Speed Booster ULTRA 0.71x II is redesigned, however, to fit on OM System cameras. Consequently, support for legacy cameras with passive/non-electronic MFT mount is dropped. If the camera’s mount has no electrical contacts, it is no longer supported. For example, the original Blackmagic Cinema Camera 2.5k from 2012 and Digital Bolex D16 from 2013 are not supported. In addition, EF-MFT mount T Speed Booster ULTRA 0.71x II and EF-MFT mount T Speed Booster XL 0.64x II have a new feature added which lets the user configure EXIF data of a fully manual Canon EF mount lens which may subsequently be recalled by pushing a button on the Speed Booster. The following table summarizes the differences between various Metabones EF-MFT mount T Speed Boosters and Smart Adapters.

Metabones wishes to assure existing patrons that there is no intention to terminate firmware support for the original versions at the time of writing. In addition, EF-MFT mount T CINE Speed Booster ULTRA 0.71x, EF-MFT mount T CINE Speed Booster XL 0.64x and all Metabones products for Blackmagic will not be updated but will remain the same in the foreseeable future. At the same time as the new products launch, Metabones publishes new firmware version 4.20 for EF-MFT. Existing patrons please download Metabones App from metabones.com and click on the SUPPORT/DOWNLOAD link to get the latest version. For over a decade, Metabones EF-MFT mount Speed Boosters have been the de-facto standard for many types of video work, where a Panasonic GH series camera or a Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera and the venerably fast (bright) Sigma 18-35/1.8 DC HSM Art 013 have been standard pairing. Metabones not only fills in the missing link between the two (serving as an adapter) but the Speed Booster also brings full-frame performance to the table. Today’s new hardware and new firmware are great news to new and existing customers alike. |

About Metabones
Metabones®, together with its allied partners Caldwell Photographic and WB Design, is the pioneer and leader of two key technologies which have catalyzed the transition from mirror to mirrorless. Speed Booster® (winner of the 2013 TIPA Best Photo Accessory Award) makes lenses brighter, wider and sharper, and Smart Adapter™ breaks the lens mount compatibility barrier by electronically integrating interchangeable single-lens reflex (SLR) lenses and mirrorless cameras. Metabones® offers a comprehensive range of adapters covering most popular lens mounts, as well as some rare and exotic ones. "Always at the forefront of innovation without ever setting aside practicality as a professional tool" perhaps best epitomizes Metabones' philosophy.
